There’s something magnetic about true crime books. You tell yourself you’ll read one chapter before bed. Then suddenly it’s 2am, four murders in, tea gone cold, and you’re side-eyeing your quiet neighbour with the dodgy smile.
I’ve been there. And I guess that’s what led me to write Scottish Killers: 25 True Crime Stories.
When I first started writing this book, I didn’t anticipate the emotional rollercoaster it would become. As a psychologist, I spent years exploring the intricacies of the human mind, but nothing quite prepared me for the harrowing depths of these true crime stories.
I remember sitting in my writing study, surrounded by my notes, feeling the weight of each story. There were moments I had to step away, to process the emotions that each case brought out of me. It’s one thing to read about a crime, but it’s another to immerse yourself in it, to try and understand the minds behind it. And then get those thoughts, feelings and psychological insights down on paper.

True Crime Stories and Murder Books
I didn’t write this book just to shock or entertain, though if it keeps you hooked into the wee hours, I’ll take that as a win. What I really wanted was to explore criminal psychology. To uncover the why behind the what.
- Why do people kill?
- What snaps inside the mind that turns a friend or neighbour into a killer?
- Why do we choose to poison our enemies?
And the one question that haunted me most: could any of us do the same, given the right (or wrong) circumstances? That question stayed with me through every single chapter.
Each case in this true crime book is a window into the complexities of human behaviour, the fragility of life, and heartbroken family’s quest for justice. From the notorious serial killers who left a trail of terror to the lesser-known cases that still send shivers down the spine, these true crime stories are as compelling as they are chilling.
It’s a deeply human exploration of the circumstances, motives and consequences behind some of the most infamous crimes in Scotland’s history.
Inside the Criminal Minds of Scottish Killers
This book takes you deep into Scotland’s most disturbing true crime stories, from notorious serial killers and shocking crimes of passion, to quiet killers who lived among us.
If you’re a fan of Glasgow crime books or British crime books, you’ll find plenty to chew on here.
Take Peter Manuel, ‘The Beast of Birkenshaw.’ Cold, manipulative, and terrifyingly composed. After murdering an entire family, he stayed in their house for days, eating their food and answering their phone. That level of detachment is both cruel and clinical. The perfect example of how criminal minds rationalise the unthinkable.
Many more famous killers are included in the book, from Archibald Hall and Dennis Nilsen, to Ian Brady and Peter Tobin, all with either Scottish heritage or links to their despicable crimes.

Criminal Psychology, Not Just Crime
Each chapter explores a different psychological theme related to the previous true crime stories. We look at hitmen who kill without blinking, narcissists who destroy for control, and people who murder to fit in, whether with lovers, gangs, or dangerous ideologies.
Other chapters unpack:
- Diminished responsibility
- Insanity pleas
- The psychology of hiding a body
- Accidental killings and the shame they leave behind
- Why men and women kill for different reasons
It’s not all gore and shock value. This is about the mechanics of a criminal mind. What pushes someone over the edge, what stops others, and how the justice system draws the line between culpable homicide and full-blown murder.
In Scottish Killers: 25 True Crime Stories, you’ll find:
- Detailed Case Histories: Each chapter delves into a specific case, providing context, background and analysis.
- Psychological Insights: Drawing from my expertise, I explore the mental states and possible motivations of the perpetrators.
- Reflections on the Justice System: Some cases highlight the triumphs of our legal system, while others expose its shortcomings.
- Stories of Redemption: Not all tales end in darkness. Some individuals find paths to redemption, challenging our perceptions of criminal behavior.
You’re going to find this book absolutely captivating!
Real Stories. Real People.
At one of my author talks, someone asked me, “Don’t you worry that true crime stories feed into our obsession with murder?”
And you know what? Fair question.
I paused, probably too long, and then said, “People don’t read these stories because they love murder. They read them because they want to understand it.”
And I stand by that.
The more we learn about criminal psychology, the better we can protect ourselves, our communities, and even prevent future tragedies. That’s what understanding gives us, hope.

True Crime Books
There’s no shortage of murder books and British true crime books, the shelves are filled with them. But most only scratch the surface. With Scottish Killers, I wanted to lift the lid on these true crime stories. To show what lies beneath the headlines. The trauma. The rage. The reasons.
Scotland has its fair share of blood on the cobblestones, from ancient public executions to modern domestic murders. This book walks through the darkest alleys of our past, helping you understand how killers think, and how we, as a society, respond.
Whether you’re into:
- British crime books
- The psychology of serial killers
- Case studies on Scottish killers
- Or just gripping true crime stories with real psychological insight…
This book’s for you. It’s not just about what happened, it’s about why it happened. And what that means for us today.
Even in the darkest moments, we must strive to understand, to heal and to ensure that history does not repeat itself.
A British Crime Book
Scottish Killers: 25 True Crime Stories is out now in Paperback and on Amazon Kindle.
I hope it grabs you, disturbs you, and maybe, just maybe, makes you think differently about the people around you. Because here’s the truth I came back to over and over:
Given enough pressure, loss, or rage… any one of us could be capable of something awful.
And if that doesn’t send a chill down your spine, then maybe you’re the one I should be writing about next!

This book isn’t for the faint-hearted. The stories are raw, unfiltered, and, at times, deeply unsettling. But they are real. They happened. And I believe they deserve to be told with honesty and respect.
